It does have an anise flavor but is easily covered up by the intense pepper floating inside. I happen to like spice, so I do enjoy this "absinthe." After a glass or few of a more traditional absinthe, I find this most enjoyed SLOWLY sipped from a pipe with crushed ice.
As a side note, I bought this in part for curiosity, but mostly for the bottle. I have a collection of skull bottles/decanters; one for bourbon, one for cognac, one for rum, and this one will be filled with tequila once I'm done with it.
It is hard to properly rate this one. As an absinthe, one star if any. As a novelty absinthe-like beverage experience you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere, I'd give it a 5. It is both unique and enjoyable, unlike most novelty reds or blacks or neon-greens. As long as you understand you are buying a novelty, I give it a rough 4.
