Libertine 72 is fine and powerful. Its balance and its various plants make it a ideal companion to discover absinthe.

Libertine 72 Intense was awarded the gold medal at the international competition in Lyon in 2019.

It is the sister of Libertine 55, with a higher alcohol content, but also, due to its complexity, very different to the first version.
Produced according to a recipe from last century (1894), Libertine 72 is an authentic absinthe.
It is entirely made with plants and seeds. Its colour is 100% natural.
In its composition are included mainly grand wormwood, green anise, star anise, liquorice, fennel, coriander, Melissa, hyssop and veronica.
Libertine 72 has the particularity of having been produced from a distilled blend (each plant macerates and is then distilled individually before blending)

Did you know?

- The label of Libertine 72 bottle was taken from a painting that we specially ordered from a young of the Vosges. It represents a scene of absinthe being consumed in a café.

- During the Belle Epoque, after Pontarlier, Fougerolles had the highest number of producers of absinthe. Sometimes some of the casks used in Fougerolles were sent to Pontarlier to cover their needs.

- Libertine 72 participated in the 2007 Absinthiades ; it was awarded 6th place.

Background

The Devoille distillery was founded in 1859. It still bears the name of its founder, Paul Devoille, since he largely contributed to its success and the beginning of the century. He is to be thanked for the recipe of Libertine (1894), now preciously kept at the Musée des Eaux de Vie in Lapoutroie, France.

After having belonged to Raymond Gouttefroy (son-in-law of Paul Devoille), the distillery was handed over to René de Miscault in 1985. The latter considerably changed the running of the company and enlarged the range of its products and also opened the Paul Devoille distillery to the public.

Today it is Hugues de Miscault, the son of René de Miscault, who runs this family distillery.

Serving Suggestions

- At first, savour Libertine 72 with half a piece of sugar. Then add more or less according to your taste.

- For one measure of absinthe (3cl), add 2 to 5 measure of fresh water.

Paul Devoille, France

1859:

The distillery was founded by Xavier Devoille. His son, Paul Devoille, was very dedicated to developing the distillery, and worked hard on its growth. This is why up until this day, the distillery is named after him. Paul Devoille was a very important person in Fougerolles, he held the position of the major for many years.

1986:

Due to the bad financial position the distillery was in, Jaques Veillet, the new owner of the distillery, decided to sell it to an experienced business man, who already invested into a couple of other distilleries inside and outside on France. René Miscault bought the distillery, and made some rapid administrational changes. He also expanded their product range, and opened the distillery for visitors to the public. These measures may seem drastic, however, they saved the distillery in the end. Today, Hugues Miscault, the son of René Miscault, runs the distillery.


Paul Devoille's Absinthe:


Their probably most popular absinthes, apart from the Libertines, and the Enigma Verte and Enigma Blanche. Absinthe Soixante-Cinq is a pretty interesting absinthe as well, with a quite spicy smell combined with a fruityness from the wine-alcohol base. Certainly, there are a lot of other spirits produced at Paul Devoille, such as eau-de-vies and liqueurs. From plum to strawberry, you can find nearly all of the common flavours.

First off, please do not be put off by the three-star rating, it’s just that I’m comparing this reasonably priced offering to the very high standard of many pricier offerings on this site. Libertine is tasty, and I will probably buy again due to the low price. That being said, I am a fan of the herbal bite which is why I drink absinthe. In this one, it’s a little less pronounced and I’m not quite getting the bite that I’m craving sometimes. The flavor is well-balanced however and might be a good introduction to absinthe for the inexperienced. I love the darker color and the flavor is a bit different, so worth having in my collection

I already reviewed this absinthe. I have a bittersweet relationship with it. Right now I just want to point out that the louche have been noticeably weaker lately (very). So, please, put a bt more attention on it.

Just got this in my latest shipment. It is absolutely lovely. Milkiest louche I've encountered so far! The flavor is very complex. I can taste the fennel! Very good, highly recommended.

My first bottle of Absinthe I have bought and chose myself, took me a while to get the right one and I feel I made the right choice. Once I had the measurements right for my personal preference the taste grew on me. I also like the color of the drink and the La Louche ritual of adding the iced water over the sugar which made it the milky color which made it an enjoyable relaxing drink. Enjoying it very much!

have had only a few absinthe's [ordinaire,grand absinthe,absente, not a critic,but i know what i like, the price,the A.C., the flavor,the louche,all in line for "the working mans absinthe" TO YOUR HEALTH!

I'm new to the world of absinthe but I must say, either I received a bad batch or this is just not my style. I read other reviews here and am beginning to think that the former might be the case.

The color was nothing that you could even remotely consider green. It is definitely brown. Upon opening it, it smelled "off" to me. I only got a small hint of anise. There was something else, however, that was herbal: the best description I can give.

Upon pouring, the louche was a milky brown: almost like very light coffee. The taste was unlike any absinthe I've ever had. There is a lot going on in it but I'm not sure if I care for it. I taste the herbal aspect, but there's an almost medicine-y finish.

Again, based on the other reviews here, I'm beginning to think I may have received a bad bottle. Also, remember, I've only been drinking absinthe for about a year now, so I'm hardly an expert. Just my honest opinion here.
