- In the late 1800's most Parisian artists used to spend their summer days in the floating café on the Seine called "La Grenouillère"? The place was strategically half-hidden in the trees, by the riverside, and was crowded, loud, and populated by easy girls named "Grenouille". Maupassant's short story "Ivette" and Monet 's "La Grenouillère" are proof that this mix was indeed inspirational.
The company was founded by Marcela and Josef Zufanek, together with their sons Martin, Josef and Jan. The company operates in a small district named Borsice u Blatnice in the region of Zlin since the year 2000.
Although the family's main activity is the processing of fruit and honey into the form of quality spirits and liqueurs, Martin decided to start producing absinthe in 2008 and created one worthy of its nomination : the St. Antoine absinthe.
During that same year, Martin developed a second version helped by many absinthe lovers and their advice. The latter came out in August 2008 and is a real improvement !
- At first, savour your La Grenouille with half a piece of sugar. Then, add more or less according to your taste.
- For one measure of absinthe (3cl), add 2 to 5 measures of fresh water.
The Zufanek Distillery was founded in 2000. At first, the family focused on the production of honey and fruit based liqueurs. In 2008, Martin started to distill absinthe and the St. Antoine was the first one of this distillery. Shortly after the launch of St. Antoine, Martin created La Grenouille, and absinthe Mead Base.
What's special about this distillery is that all fruit used for the production of their spirits are cultivated on their own orchards. Most of the herbs used for the absinthes are also grown by the Zufanek family themselves.
Their mission is: 100% natural products.

It has a beautiful louche, bright milky white, with just a bit of green luminescence. Very little aniseed, but that is just fine in thise case. A special little absinthe.

A different kind of verte, with a value of its own. It is definitely not the standard green absinthe, it has a peculiar balance, a subtlety, that makes it stand apart from the rest of the pack. It is delicate and has little anise, with an unobtrusive scent of lemon, and a wide palette of scents that reveal themselves little by little. I only got the sample, but I'm definitely going to get some real bottles in a very near future.

First off this is the first good quality Czech I have had the honour of having on the shelf. Usually, it takes me a couple of pours to decide whether I like an absinthe or not. This one I decided half way through the first drink at 3 to 1 ratio. Now, someone looking to try traditional style complex absinthe I wouldn't go here, that's the only reason why I wont give a five. But that's not where the beauty lies in this. It has a lovely louche with a great natural light milk green colour to go with. Very refreshing subtle spice, and lemon tang presence up front, anise blended well there but hard to notice with the lemon power. It is very good quality and is thick enough on the tongue surprisingly considering how light it smells. I had to restrain myself from drinking it all night, would be an ideal summer drink for most but it tasted good in the winter here! Just very refreshing and gives off good vibes. Having good quality French and Swiss absinthes on the shelf this one has got me interested in hunting out more Czech stuff to go with them.
Santé.

Great louche, lots of stuff going on with the aroma and flavors, Just from mulling over the odors I've noted hints of lemongrass, confection, thyme, something like menthol, coriander, pine resin, and something that reminds me of Christmas spices, wormwood, a peppery anise, fresh mown grass, rosemary, clean soil, cardamom, allspice, and a bit of a green tea astringency, all of this definitely leads to a lot of salivation and makes you want to keep drinking. This absinthe is bold and fairly un-traditional, but it's truly wonderful.

A very different absinthe. The first drink is light and refreshing; however, by the end of the glass I dont think I would want another. The lemon balm accent is slightly overwhelming.

A great absinthe for the anise hater. Louche is alright but signals a lack anise. The nose is camphor with slight anise. Pallet starts with the bitters of wormwood then shifts to camphor. The finish begins with a sharp anise taste (only for a brief second), then shifts to camphor as the wormwood bitters come forth to create an intriguing balance of "camphor bitterness". If you don't like anise this could be a good drink for you. I have yet to try it as a mixer but my instincts tell me it could make a very nice absinthe tonic.

A verry interesting absinthe indeed! The quality of La Grenouille is superb; however, there is an overwhelming lemon balm flavor. At first I was plesently suprised to notice the lemon accent; at the same time, I dont think I could drink more than one glass in a setting. Over all, I would prefer more anise rather then a lemon accent.

The absinthe has a unique taste to it. Ginger mixed with refreshing mint. Subtle tones of anise and wormwood. A pleasant alcohol burn. Not vociferous or weak. A median. The louche was decent. Not the best I've seen but still formed well. I don't recommend purchasing Czech absinthes, but the experience I've had with L'Ancienne and this have certainly changed my view.
