The Svensk Absinth Distillery is a small distillery in Örebrom, Sweden. It was founded by Mikael Norell and Tomas Runnquist in 2009.
After several years of hard work and many distillation tests, the two friends put their first two absinthes on the market: the Vit Opal and the Grön Opal. The Vit Opal (White Opal) is the first Blanche absinthe ever produced in Sweden. Every step in the production is done by hand: from the growing and harvesting of the best plants to the bottling and the labelling.
The Svensk Absinthe Distillery focuses on small batches made with high quality selected ingredients, that both friends harvest by hand. Almost all plants come from the distillery's herb garden: roman wormwood (Artemisia pontica), melissa, hyssop and many other ingredients, carefully picked by hand. This allows a better control of the plants' quality. The high quality is particularly important to Mikael and Tomas, which explains why they spend the largest part of their time in the herb garden.
The grand-wormwood, one of absinthe's most important ingredients, is not cultivated, but rather foraged from the wild. It is only found in certain locations in Sweden. The amount of absinthe they can produce depends on how much wormwood they harvest in August. After the harvest, the absinthe is brought back home and hung up for drying in the distillery's attic for one year. The aroma of these two absinthes is particularly intense and fragrant. The distiller himself says that this wormwood is of much better quality than any cultivated ones.
The distillation takes place in a 125l still, filled only to 90l. After the distillation, the absinthe is stocked in barrels for at least three months before being bottled, to ensure a rounded flavour.
Ecological thinking is very important to Mikael and Tomas: they are careful to respect nature when growing their herbs and foraging their wormwood, and a large array of solar panels provides the distillery with power.

Added on the : 04/05/2019 EnglishOverall: This is an extremely well-made Blanche. A very solid recipe that makes it at the level of the best out there, but with its own strong personality and uniqueness: an undeniable and very welcome Swedish touch.
Details-
Appearance: perfectly clear. A visible texture quite thick, almost like rich simple syrup.
Louche: builds up quickly. Fully louched at just a bit more than 1:1 with water. Very thick! Stays quite thick even with signification dilution (1:4 / 1:5). I love to see those clay-like traces inside the glass when moving around the liquid...
Aroma: neat, it’s already extremely fragment: with strong minty notes, but also the holy trinity well present. Also, something else. Something different: between white flowers and dry hay or grass, or maybe chamomile? Louched, the mintiness is definitely at the front, still well embedded among other fresh aromas, the trinity, and again, this little something different. Very complex, a lot is going on...
Flavor/Mouthfeel: so smooth, so well balanced, so complex... First, delicate bite from the wormwood. Then, some sweetness (probably from the anis): expressing itself in tonka beans (or marzipan) type of flavours, but not at all overpowering. And also spiciness and citruses, like peppermint, lemon balm and maybe a touch of ginger.
Finish: the spiciness lingers... and is followed by some flowery or dried herbs/chamomile-type of flavours. This little something unique has been with us all along. This is the effect of using several typically Nordic plants.

Both the Absinthes are just beautiful - the full bodied different tastes. White Opal a little bit more summery in my opinion. Been a hit with all my friends too. Oh and the GIN - don’t forget the amazing Kilsbergen gin.

Still deciding if I am partial to Blanches or Vertes as my preferred Absinthes. Gron Opal & Vit Opal both very good! If I had to choose, I would recommend Vit Opal for the new absintheur. Pleasant anise flavor but not licorice candy like. And so refreshing. I don't believe it needs a sugar cube.

Well, what can I say – Vit Opal nearly knocked me off my chair... This is such a wonderful blanche, made with skill and care, complex yet easy to appreciate regardless of your earlier experience with absinthe.
It louches with a thick, milky white with shining opalescent hues. Mouthfeel is just where you want an absinthe to be, and the flavour is smooth, round and above all very balanced. Anise and fennel support the powerful wormwood in a warm and friendly way, and there are certainly plenty of other (typically Swedish, I guess?) herbs in here that I cannot put my finger on… Dilute it 1:5 or higher, where this absinthe really opens up, and you will see what I’m talking about.
Vit Opal differs from all the traditional “la bleue” I have tasted, which I think is just refreshing.
Conclusion: Buy it!

Lighter than the grön opal, but when you inhale and then taste it, it's still as if you're standing in the meadow.

This may be the ideal Blanche for those who mostly love the Vertes or enjoy cocktails. The louche is beautiful, showing bluish reflexes while staying opalescent and not too thick, with a clear top layer, stil thick even above 1:5. The aroma is subtle and complex and deep rather then intense. All the flavours peculiar to the Grön Opal are here too, the Vit being less herbaceous and having even stronger notes of ginger and cola. Think of a pond surrounded by wild grass in summer day. The sweetness of green anise is present but not as strong or even intrusive as in some Bleue. The lovely bitterness of wormwood is surrounded by other spicy notes. Because of its balance it is difficult to tear apart the main components, and the general feeling is that of freshly cut wild grass. The finish is fresh and slightly bitter, and it stays forever both in the nose and tongue.
While I drink almost exclusively the vertes, I was drawn to the Vit because of the very good experience I had with Grön and because of its lower alcohol content. The Vit is likely to be the only blanche I am going to buy again and again (I bought three bottles so far). It is less strong (or even less heavy) than the Grön, while retaining its complex palette of tastes and aromas. My favourite dilution is 1:5 or even higher, with no sugar. I found it is also perfect in cocktails like Suissesse (with egg white and orgeat) or mixed with elderflower or rose syrup, as its flavours remain always evident.

Ready yourself for battle against the forces of darkness with one of the FINEST elixirs on EARTH. Or simply enjoy it leisurely on a pleasant occasion. It tempers the resolve, It revitalizes the constitution, it makes a warm feeling in the tummy. Dashes of Alpine garden and heaps of dedicated & loving craftsmanship make this my favorite Swedish blanche.

Got a possibility to enjoy this high quality blanche first time in 2014. The first bottle didn't last very long...
So, it's great to find it now outside Sweden. In my opinion it's simply one of the best blanches available. Everything is very well balanced, which I consider as a mark of a great absinthe. Aftertaste is very pleasant and stays in the mouth for a long time. For me it's perfect without sugar and I think it doesn't need any. Also it as a fine thick louche with blueish tint which is lovely to watch. Highly recommended.

Being Swedish I've bought also this one here at home. Vit Opal is absolutely the best blanche I've had so far though. But I do have to try some more brands before being able to rank it as no 1 (generally speaking).
In my opinion I think it is pretty comparable with Blanche Neige. (?)
- Having rated both the green and the white Opal now I feel a bit like a fan-boy. ;-)
