1 Absinthe La Valote Martin – Belle Epoque

The absinthe Belle Epoque is slightly more bitter than the other clear absinthes from Philippe Martin.

The label depicts a poster made at the time of the absinthe ban in Switzerland. A law enforcer stands on top of the dead green fairy. In the background you can see Helvetica, the female embodiment of Switzerland, crying in mourning for the absinthe.

1 Absinthe La Valote Martin – Fée Verte

Fée Verte du Val-de-Travers is distilled by Phillipe Martin according to a traditional recipe.

Most of the herbs are cultivated in the own garden of the distillery, that is situated right in front of the building in Boveresse.

Aroma: A more dominant grand wormwood presence than in most La Bleue absinthes. Subtle tones of roman wormwood, hyssop and lemon balm.
Palate: Rich anise, hyssop and lemon balm.
Finish: Lightly bitter, with a dominant grand wormwood

1 Absinthe La Valote Martin – La Grenouillarde

The taste of La Grenouillarde reminds us of an absinthe from the time before the prohibition.

The name comes from the word “Grenouillards”. For centuries the inhabitants of Boveresse were called Grenouillardes by people from other villages in the Val-de-Travers. Grenouillards is a sweet way of saying a female frog. The name originated from the fact that the inhabitants of Boveresse had traverse a swamp area to get to the next village of Môtiers. To avoid getting their shoes wet, they jumped from tuft of grass to tuft of grass. This reminded the other people of a frog.

Today, the villagers no longer have to be afraid of getting wet feet, because a channel was built in 1950 to stop the regular flooding. On one of its banks stands a little fountain that is shaped like a frog.

La Valote Martin, Switzerland

The distillery of Philippe Martin is situated in Boveresse, in the Val-de-Travers, the birthplace of absinthe and today home to some of the finest absinthe distilleries.

Philippe Martin distills his absinthes in an old house known to locals as La Maison des Chats, a centuries-old building decorated with stone sculptures of cats. Right opposite is the distillery's own garden, where most of the herbs used for Philippe’s absinthe is cultivated.

Philippe took over the distillery from his father Francis Martin in 2014, who distilled for 33 years during the time of the absinthe ban in Switzerland. When absinthe was re-legalized in 2005, Francis received a licence to produce absinthe legally.
